It was of course widely accepted at this time that warships were potentially vulnerable to air attack, although to what degree was a matter for debate. During trials in the United States in July 1921, the ex-German battleship Ostfriesland had been sunk by air attack, but only under the most favourable (and unrealistic) conditions: first, it was a static target, with its watertight doors left open, and secondly, it had no defences, which allowed a low-level attack, with no excitement to distract the bomber crews.

The Germans, their plans more advanced, invaded on the following day with a bold combination of seaborne and airborne landings. The bomber component of the Luftwaffe for ' Weserübung' was not particularly large, as resources had to be kept back against a French offensive. It consisted of I/StG 1 with the long-range anti-shipping Ju 87R; II and III/KG 4 (He 11IP), commanded by Martin Fiebig; KG 26, commanded by Robert Fuchs, a Spanish veteran and the first bomber pilot to be awarded the Ritterkreuz; KGr 100 (He 111); and KG 30 (Ju 88), commanded by Walter Loebel, the first well-known bomber pilot in the Luftwaffe.

Meanwhile Denmark, taken by surprise, had fallen with barely a shot fired in its defence. For the Germans, little more than a show of strength was needed. A leaflet raid on Copenhagen by I/KG 4, in which one Heinkel was slightly damaged by machine-gun fire from the ground, was the sole contribution of the bomber force. Denmark's value lay in the fact that it commanded the narrows into the Baltic, which to Germany made it strategically important. On 9 April intensive air reconnaissance over the North Sea soon located the British Home Fleet off Bergen, and elements of KG 26 and KG 30 were launched against it.
