In some cases, the genealogistcompiler also took advantage of other records, such as occasional listings of the population, to add information about individuals or families, but this was not a routine procedure. The village genealogies generally cover whatever period the available material permits, extending back in some cases to the late sixteenth century. The data are organized in the form of family histories of individual nuclear family units in virtually the identical manner that historical demographers using family reconstitution organize data for analysis.

The village of Oschelbronn is in the former Kingdom of Wurttemberg, near the eastern edge of the Black Forest in the present-day district of Boblingen. The two Bavarian villages of Anhausen and Gabelbach are located in the Swabian area of Bavaria within about 20 kilometers of each other and both belong to the present-day district of Augsburg, not far from the city of that name. The third Bavarian village, Kreuth, is located about 100 kilometers to the southeast in the mountainous terrain near the Austrian border in the district of Miesbach in Upper Bavaria.

The main advantage of village genealogies is that they spare the demographer the tedious and time-consuming initial task of the actual reconstitution. In addition, they often include sections on the local history of the village and other information which can be useful as background information for demographic analysis. The initial series of village genealogies was a by-product of National Socialism's racial policies and ideology. Their systematic production and publication were sponsored by a party organization established for that purpose.
