So was born "La Noche Triste", his first poem. The next day he showed it to the editor of the High School Bulletin, Ernest C. Jewell. Jewell accepted it, all twenty-five stanzas of it, for publication in April. "I knew that I would never do anything else after that," Frost confessed years later. " In one sense, however, he was found. The first impression some of his classmates had formed of him, chiefly those who were enrolled in the general course and who therefore seldom or never sat in class with him, was that he was a grind.

The opposite of his sister as a student in the elementary grades, Robert was such an indolent and intractable young rogue that except for a Miss Chase his teachers had no use for him. After a year and a half they informed his mother that he would probably be six more years in getting through the eighth grade. At that point Belle Frost took matters into her own hands. Beginning in January, 1887, Robert sat in school in Salem as one of her pupils. She showed him no partiality; when he stuck a schoolmate with a pin, she yanked him out of his seat and whipped him before the class.
