Seen as a great narrative, the Bible produces character in its effect upon us, making us into the people we are. This happens not so much because we take on the rules we find in the Bible—for just taking on rules is an exterior thing, it doesn’t really shape us—but because we enter the world of the Bible or, perhaps better, the world of the Bible enters into our world and we start living as characters in a double-narrative, the narrative written in the Bible and the narrative being written as we live our own lives.

We will not be able to make an irrefutable argument for this conclusion (for we will always be characters within this narrative). Yet we will see that this claim is entailed by the narrative’s own internal claim of self-transcendence.
