In the end, of course, Hitler did marry her, and although she knew that her marriage would last for a few days only, I believe it gave her deep satisfaction. At least, when her relationship to him was at last officially made known to the world, it was as his wife. Eva Braun’s role has been misunderstood and exaggerated. She was a woman brought to the side of a powerful man by love and not ambition. And when the time came and he was no longer powerful, she freely chose to die at his side. In February 1934 Hitler informed me that I should once again be flying him to Italy for a meeting with Mussolini.

This I did at once, and they quoted a price of 275,000 marks. Hitler called me to the Brown House. ‘It’s too dear,’ he said. ‘I shall wait. ’ After that I went back to my normal flying duties with the Lufthansa, but on 30 January, by which time Hitler had become master of the Third Reich, I was seconded to him as his personal pilot. It was a job that lasted until his death in 1945. Once he was head of the German Government Hitler flew far more than before, and I also flew a good many of his ministers.

On that particular evening I talked to the girl who was sitting beside me. She was twenty-two, and very attractive, but she told me that she was afraid she would never get married, because when she compared all the men she had ever met with Hitler they were so far inferior to him that none could possibly satisfy her. I was malicious enough to tell her what Hitler had said about women: that none of them could hold her tongue. She stared at me almost in horror. ‘He said that! Oh, how mistaken he is!
