Ultimately, by manipulating these in-between moments in an otherwise short and forgettable scene, Arnold uncovers hidden tension between the characters in the film. The scene becomes a surreal reworking of a miserable family meal or perhaps a glimpse into the life of Atticus Finch and his family when the cameras are turned off.
