DESCRIPTION: Test ovate in outline, lobate, peripheral margin rounded to carinate, compressed; chambers on spiral side ornamented with irregularly arranged and raised costae which ramify from raised sutures, on umbilical side, inflated, with inner margin concave, bearing radiating intersutural furrows which mayor may not reach peripheral margin, 6-8 in final whorl; wall translucent, glassy, finely perforate; aperture eccentric, at base of ovate depression lying beneath internal margin of chambers, with short triangular tooth.

OBSERVATIONS: Populations of E. macellum exhibit two formae which intergrade with each other. Elphidium IIlCleellum (Fichtel and Moll), forma typica, PI. 14, figs. 1-4. This forma has a carinate periphery, multiple nodes and many chambers in the final whorl. 28. DISTRIBUTION: see Figure 7 and 14. DESCRIPTION: Test ellipsoidal, compressed, sides parallel, peripheral margin rounded; wall shiny, smooth; aperture narrow, short, with long entosolenian tube. LENGTH: range: 200-240. OBSERVATIONS: As our specimens lack the carinate margin of F. elliptica as described by Sequenze, we designate it F. cf. F. elliptica. DISTRIBUTION: see Figure 7.
