Our goal was to prepare nurse practitioners for practice in collaboration with physicians in rural Missouri. The program was quite successful but was initially opposed by the School of Nursing—a development similar to the medical schools’ resistance to the growth of family practice. Many of our nurse practitioner graduates are still serving rural populations. The certiﬁcate program closed in 1982 as Kellogg support ended and a master’s level program in nursing was created. Over time, in each of the three primary care disciplines, the need for an academically prepared faculty became paramount.
Such was the commitment of one medical school in the 1960s to giving general internists, pediatricians, and family physicians an education that would more closely mirror their practice. At Rochester, I learned a great deal about patient care and had an incredibly gratifying educational experience. In 1964, I moved to the University of Missouri at Columbia as assistant dean for admissions and student affairs with academic appointments in the Department of Community Health and Medical Practice and in the Department of Internal Medicine.
